Maritess Zurbano, World-class Conjuror and Hypnotist, has spent years using magic to battle racism, misogyny, and the legacy of colonialism. She’s determined to go down in the history books as one of the greats because she is one of the greats. But when her mentor of 20+ years dies, his museum home is separated, labeled, and put up for public auction, she thinks back throughout history. What happens to women in the field of magic after men stop valuing them? They disappear. Maritess has one chance to put on the show of her life, own her history, and dismantle some white supremacy along the way. Directed by Sara Porkalob

“Today Zurbano’s magic act is about taking back power, exerting that power over her audience, and owning the sexual overtones…”  Bust Magazine

“With her street-smart stage presence, dazzling illusions, and great sense of humor, Maritess redefines magic for a hip new multicultural age,” David Henry Hwang, Tony-Award-winning playwright, M. Butterfly

Maritess Zurbano is the only Filipina-American magician and hypnotist in history. She is a former Las Vegas croupier, former member of a professional baccarat team, and had her own illusion show in Japan. Zurbano competed in the coveted world championships of magic (also known as the Olympics of Magic) at the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques in Lisbon against 150 other nominated magicians. She has been profiled by Newsday, Lifetime Television, the BBC News and The Village Voice. You can find her opinion essays on magic published at Ms. Magazine, and The Seattle Times.
