Bits from the Bins is a challenge show where performers must create new acts within the restrictions given to them by Head of Haus Whisper De Corvo.
In this show performers must create a costume using only materials they found at the Goodwill Bins*
why?
Costuming is a large part of burlesque, how a piece is removed tells a story. What order it comes off in is planned and important to the act.
The revival of Burlesque has in large part been driven by a DIY mindset, burlesque dancers engineering their reveals to install laughs or awe in their audiences. Some performers have access and ability to work with costumers and seamstresses, buying their pieces made professionally and engineered just for them. This is wonderful!
However for many performers this is out of reach. We must come to the stage with whatever we could create ourselves, and for many of us it starts off the rack at a thrift store.
This is how Whisper started.
However this show is not just about costuming. This show encourages performers to be flexible and create based off of the materials they could find. To be creative and let themselves be inspired by their finds instead of seeking out fabrics and trims that fit their inspiration . To look at pieces not just as they are but as they could be reimagined.
What is a challenge show?
The purpose of Haus De Corvo is to provide support and community with an focus on education. Challenge shows are set by Whisper De Corvo to build skills needed to have a long, fun, and successful performance career. From Costuming to stage presence these shows are set to entertain and educate. Performers create new acts within the restrictions outlined for the show. How will they interpret and embrace the theme? What will they create? Will they leave you laughing, inspired, or deeply moved, you will only know once the curtains open!
