The Seattle-based experimental pop project brings Peter Verdoes (In Praise of Folly, Can the Boy Tell Time), brother Benjamin Verdoes (Iska Dhaaf, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, In Praise of Folly) and newcomer Sarah Han together to deliver 12 new tracks that ride the tension between anxiety and surrender: moody trip-hop beats anchoring layers of expansive synth and guitar loops, all swaddled in familiar pop song structures with a garage rock sensibility.
As a follow-up to their 2014 self-titled debut, featuring guests Sam Miller (Ravenna Woods, Sean Nelson, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band) and Nathan Quiroga (Iska Dhaaf, Mad Rad, Macklemore), of “lo-fi sugar-coated earworms that’ll stay with you long after the last drum-machine beat” (Jonathan Zwickel, City Arts Magazine), “Promises” delivers a fuller exploration of decay and the effects of time in more complex song construction.
